The first 2-links are Unix-only (*BSD and Linux), the last link includes various Windows and Solaris versions. What comes out on top? The answer won't surprise you, neither will the identity of the worst-performing OS. What is shocking is how badly some otherwise decent OSes perform. The section on filesystems is also quite interesting: you thought non-journalled filesytems were faster than journalled ones? Think again. Quick FAQ on the article: O(n) means whatever is being measured proportionally increases as n increases, O(1) means performance is constant no matter how big n is. For instance: if you were measuring the amount of time it takes a webserver to serve requests, an O(n) performance means the time the webserver needs to serve a request increases proportionally to the number of requests; an O(1) performance means it takes the same amount of time for the webserver to serve 1 request as it would a gazillion bazillion requests. saidi

As to the open-source e-commerce applications out there like oscommerce<http://www.oscommerce.com/> ,zen cart <http://www.zen-cart.com/>,cpcommerce<http://cpcommerce.cpradio.org/>etc which is the best as to a Kenyan e-commerce site,security wise for the customers and generally easier to administer.What are the pros and cons.Your suggestions will be highly appreciated.

Making linux look like a mac

Ladies and gentlemen, Allow me to post a about something that has prevented me from working today; the other day i installed the Ultimate Edition linux<http://ultimateedition.info/>flavor, and after playing around with it a bit, I got it to look and behave almost like a mac but still retain that deep dark linuxy feel! See the attached screenshot. This could be a stage I am going through :-)

@Net Net, @John Doe.... Guys, wondering on the VLANS and rate limiting first, before we go down MTUs? Ok, I've been out of touch with dist networks for a long while, so am catching up on the technologies in deployment locally. Wimax, Fiber. I assume that they are all using VLANS for circuits and rate limiting applied to set circuit throughputs, am I correct in thinking this? In case of point-point and point to multi-point? And is rate limiting still used to set some part of SLAs? Or have the entire industry headed towards wi-fi broadband concept? Rgds.

Internet speed...

Hi Skunktoids, We got this deal from some ISP which I won't name for now, and they tell us that our speeds are 1MBps for both the uplink and downlink, but I highly doubt what they are telling us. Files normally download at a speed of 100kbps on average, and I do not think that that correctly reflects what the ISP is saying. However, I am not an expert on this matters, and that is why I have sought to ask the gurus on the list to shed some light. Attached hereto is a speedtest.net result graphic for more info. Thanks.
