You should have received an email from the Legatum Center last week announcing the photo contest we just launched, focusing on women entrepreneurs using technology in developing countries. I wanted to ask your help in particular in publicizing this contest, because one of the three countries we are aiming to spotlight is Kenya. The photo contest is open to anyone, but there will be special categories for photographers from "Spotlight Countries" Kenya, India, and Mexico, each with a separate $500 prize (an additional $500 prize will be awarded in the Global category, open to photographers from any country). An entrant from Kenya will enter photos taken in Kenya to the Spotlight category and will compete ONLY with other Kenyan photographers for the $500 prize. As you can see, this is a great opportunity to showcase innovative women entrepreneurs as well as Kenyan photographers; however, we've had trouble reaching people in Kenya and have not yet received any submissions from that country. We would be very grateful if you could pass along the word to any contacts in Kenya. [reminder]: 2009 EA-IGF - http://www.eaigf.or.ke Dear Colleagues, The competitiveness of our economies is increasingly dependent on the Internet and therefore mainstreaming our region in the cyberspace is of paramount importance. The challenges to achieve the knowledge economy in our region have been identified as: * Access to Broadband (at the village, in schools, in banks, in manufacturing); * Cyber Security, Trust and Privacy (for banks, for the government, for he individual user); * Policy, Legal and Regulatory Issues (to make access to Internet available and affordable, to protect consumers); * Critical Internet Resources (to ensure the stability, growth and security of the Internet); * Internet User and Consumer Protection (to protect your online identity, to protect your personal data, to guarantee your right to communicate and to information and knowledge). To address these issues at the regional level KICTANet, KENIC and other participating organizations have brought together participants from the East Africa countries of Burundi, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda and Kenya. They will be joined by delegates from the international community including the United Kingdom (UK), Japan, the United States of America (USA) and Canada among others. The expected outcome of this will be a framework that ushers the region into the digital economy. The outcome will also be a negotiating platform during the fourth United Nations Internet Governance Forum (UN IGF) taking place in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, in November 2009, the African Information Society conference in Addis Ababa in January 2010 as well as set the stage for the 37th Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) meeting to be held in Nairobi, Kenya, in March 2010. This is to therefore invite you as key Internet stakeholder in the region to join the leaders to help formulate the strategy for the future of the Internet. If I can remember well Zain had coverage in most of kenya had and I believe they still do. I have a reliable source and told me that Zain was sharing about 400 BTS with the provider outside urban areas. If they say they have covered the country I kinda believe them but as usual safcom flows deep in Kenyans veins to believe it. Just to mention safcom hasen't covered the whole of kenya I still see guys complaining having to climb trees to make a call. About eneza product, its just similar to safcoms etop up or zain's jaza jaza lets hope the market it and not fail like zain does.

Good skunkers, I came across this site which creates mobile versions of 'normal' websites in a rather painless way, http://mobify.me/, and its free. I haven't tried converting a website but sitepoint <http://www.sitepoint.com/> did and the outcome, http://m.sitepoint.com/, is pretty nice on a phone. I would be nice if some of the local news websites had mobile versions.

Orange fixed plus speeds

Hi guys, Am using an orange fixed plus connection(huawei desktop and those old telkom wireless RUIMs) and was wondering if anyone else has used it to advise me on the speeds they are getting. Am downloading an ISO and cant get the speeds to go anywhere above 15kB/s. . .at this rate al spend a k on credit n it will take a day or two. . . .
