Re: [ISOC_KE] isoc Digest, Vol 19, Issue 4

RE: DIGITAL MIGRATION Quiet interesting . All said, we deserve to have the best. Digital transmission is the best in quality, be it sound, pictures etc and can as well provide interactive video and data services that were not possible with analog technology. Digital channels also take up less bandwidth; hence free parts of the broadcast spectrum for use other usage. Most households own TV sets that are analogue and thus require decoders to for them to fit into the digital space, and at an extra cost. In other words most TV boxes are not Digital compliant. I also wish bring another dimension, and to compare this scenario with the FAKE mobile phones that were switched off recently. Simply put, whose prerogative is it to ensure that the consumer out there is protected against purchase of items that don't meet set standards. The key issues to be considered here are STANDARDS and POLICY. I think there should be an effort to ensure that non-compliant equipments, phones, TVs etc. do not enter the market. Otherwise we are going to end up spending more money on many electronic gadgets in our households that will end up (very soon) as scrap and subsequently pose threats to our fragile environment. Charles If I may fall back a little, our good neighbors -TZ-, have been in this space (Internet) a little longer than us. On Fri, Jan 4, 2013 at 4:00 PM, <isoc-request@lists.my.co.ke> wrote:

If taken within the context that the frequences that will be freed up by broadcasters once they are on the digital broadcast infrastructure will make available lower band, higher bandwidth, longer range frequencies for wireless broadband access - then I believe that the issue *does* have relevance as far as ISOC-KE is concerned. Especially with regards to more affordable and accessible internet services.
Obviously the benefits can/will only be realized if the operators who then get these frequencies can build, roll out and price infrastructure and services that will be "affordable and accessible" to the common citizen.
Any action in this regard has to be a two-pronged lobby that targets TV broadcasters (to give up the frequencies they are currently holding onto) and network operators (to deploy appropriately structured and priced broadband products.
Just my two cents...
