Re: [ISOC_KE] Chairman's Report 2012 -2014

Dear Members, I hope this message finds you well, as we prepare for the annual general meeting, I would like to share the Interim Chairman's report. We would like to welcome on board all new members who have recently signed up. I wish to thank all the members who have continuously set aside time and resources for the Kenya Chapter. Indeed we are a young Chapter but we have accomplished a lot in the short period since we were chartered. We also extend our gratitude to the Internet Society Africa Bureau, led by Dr. Dawit Bekele, Michuki Mwangi, Kevin Chege and Marsema Tariku as well as Christine Sagesser and Sabrina Wilmot from the global chapter's office who have always been at hand to support and guide the Chapter. For newcomers, the Kenyan Chapter was chartered on 9th May 2012. It was thereafter registered as a Society on 26th September 2012 by the registrar of Societies in the Government of Kenya, our registration number being 38441. Since then we have successfully held a number of events that brought together our members and colleagues from the private sector, academia, government civil society and the technical community. Some of the events we have organised or partnered in include the inaugural World IP version 6 day in June 2012, outreach to Alliance High School in 2012, Kenya Internet Governance Forum 2012 and 2013 www.kenyaigf.or.ke, East African Internet Governance Forum 2012 in Nairobi which we co-hosted with the Kenya ICT Action Network and 2013 in Burundi Organized by the Internet Society Burundi Chapter. We also had a special event to launch our Chapter in December 2012 as well as mark the Internet Societies 20 year's anniversary. In February 2013 we bided for and won the rights to host the second Africa Internet Governance Forum in September 2013 www.africaigf.or.ke. The Africa Internet Governance Forum attracted 200 participants from 29 countries and was held at the Multimedia University of Kenya. Special thanks to the interim leadership team and a number of members who not only contributed to the success of this event but other events in our annual calendar notably Elizabeth Orembo, Charles Oloo, Wangari Kabiru, Betty Magu, Martin Obuya, Paul Muchene, Davis Onsakia, Kelvin Githira, Daniel Omondi, Judy Okite and Richard Oloo. We are also grateful to the principal secretary Ministry of Information and Communications Technology Mr. Joseph Tiampati Ole Musuni and Fiona Asonga the Chief Executive Officer of Telecommunication Service Providers of Kenya who played a lead role in ensuring the success of the Africa Internet Governance Forum as well as the national steering committee appointed by the principal secretary. The Internet Society Kenya Chapter also implemented a Kiswahili Wiki project in partnership with UNESCO. The project was spearheaded by a working group led by Charles Oloo and Daniel Omondi. Other members who have contributed to this group included Kelvin Githira, Betty Magu, Wangari Kabiru, Martin Wasike, Sherin Bwire, Jacklyn Okinyi, Kefa Rabah and Jackton Okello . On behalf of the members we would like to commend them and recognise their noble effort for ensuring the Internet is accessible to all regardless of the language barriers. *Membership* Our membership has grown from 25 to 489 members since 9th May 2012, we would like to call upon all members to set aside time to attend our monthly meetings. As a Society we have bylaws and we encourage every member to acquaint themselves with the bylaws. We intend to start collecting membership fees to enable the society full fill its mission of ensuring the Internet is for all in Kenya. Membership Fees are Kes 1000 for Professionals and 500 for student members. We are also gratefull to 3 Mice Interactive through its CEO Ali Hussein, Skysis through Kelvin Githira, Kenya Human Rights Commission as well as Strathmore Universities I- lab Africa for supporting the Kenya Internet Governance Forum. *Outreach* We would like to thank Phares Kariuki for helping set up our member mailing list that has close to 200 members. We urge new members to join the vibrant discussions on the list, to join the mailing list kindly submit a request to info@isoc.or.ke. We also appreciate the efforts of our webmasters Kelvin Githira and Charles Oloo as well as Joly Mc Fie from the New York Chapter for ensuring that our events are streamed live on the Internet. We also have Social Media Presence on Face Book (Isoc Kenya ), with 300 members as well as a twitter handle and we wish to thank our administrators Mark Misiko and Liz Orembo for the good job that has seen the numbers grow. *Meetings* Member meetings are held every third Saturday of the month. We are grateful to QNET for providing a meeting venue for the Internet Society at View Park Towers in 2012. We shall be meeting at Pete's, Bishop Magua Centre Ngong Road on the ground floor, we urge all members to come with at least 100 shillings for refreshments.
