The Center for Global Communication Studies (CGCS) at the Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Pennsylvania, announces a call for proposals for small grants for research on issues of significance related to global and comparative media policy and media law. Grants will be made from $1,000 to $5,000 USD to provide additional funds to existing projects or as seed funds for small research projects or doctoral research.
Priority will be given to proposals that focus on the following subjects:
  • Media in transitional/conflict/post-conflict societies
  • The interplay between "new" and "old" media systems and regulatory structures
  • Transnational media and national regulation
  • Case studies examining media systems in restrictive media environments
  • The evolution of censorship practices
  • Measuring the impact of media development interventions
  • Analysis of media institutions and the interaction between governments, private, and nongovernmental entities
  • The role of research in media policymaking
Proposals should provide an outline of the specific scope and aims of the intended study, and a brief presentation of the research strategy and design (quantitative and/or qualitative, mixed). Applicants are welcome to involve a variety of different research methods. Proposals will also be considered for workshops/conferences that deal with the above topics as well.

Multiple grant applications are welcome, and will be awarded on a rolling basis. Awards will take into consideration the relevance of the work proposed and the quality of work to be anticipated.
