Carrier Neutral Data Center Opportunities in Africa

Given the unprecedented developments in telecommunication infrastructure deployment in Africa, data centre opportunities are growing in most parts of the continent. In response to ICT infrastructure developments, such as undersea fibre optic cables and terrestrial long haul fibre optic networks, a limited number of data centre operators have responded by deploying co-location data centres. VDSL2 Vectoring in Tunisia

In a recent article on Africa mobile versus wi-line we discussed how panellists at the Innovation Africa Digital summit in Ethiopia were playing down the role of wire-line networks in Africa. We advised that the development of wire-line networks should continue side by side with mobile networks because of the long term impact of wire-line networks in priceless. We mentioned Ethio Telecom as one African operator who was focused on increasing the penetration of ADSL lines in Ethiopia. Telecom's Investment and the Economy

At a function recently, the Executive Chairman of the National Communication Commission, Dr Eugene Juwah, reported that since 1999 the telecommunications sector has seen investment totalling $25 billion. He also revealed that the number of active subscribers is currently over 113 million. Another positive development is the proposed take-off of the Mobile Number Portability, where subscribers could migrate from one network to another, while retaining the same mobile phone number.
