Kelvin,
Canopy rides on management VLANs which are configurable with additional
public IPs for reachability, and similarly fiber on FDDI rings. Canopy
backbone can run on its own or on Fiber Rings, as far as I know from
experience.
I don't know much about coax, but I would assume its technology limits the
use of public IPs.
