Multistakeholderism is it an oxymoron? will it survive the times?

Listers, I have been observing various initiatives that have been established under the multistakeholder approach and i must admit that we have a problem there are lots of murmurs suggesting flaws in communication or decision making structures, i i have also noticed that there is a lot of emphasis on personalities and groupings of like minded people as opposed to institutions which appears really harmful at the beginning but is characterised by strained relationships which stifflle synergies that can be achieved through knowledge and information sharing based on experiences. 99% of Kenya’s 6.5m internet users access it via mobile, of which Safaricom owns 77% marketshare.In Kenya, when you buy a 1.5Gb internet bundle from Safaricom you pay 1000ksh (~$12). You’ve paid for the data, and there is no additional cost to Safaricom if you were to use that data today or a year from now. The whole concept of data bundle expiry is ridiculous, as noted by Safaricom CEO Bob Collymore when he visited the iHub:“When you go into a petrol station and fill up your car, does the owner of the petrol station tell you to bring it back on Wednesday to take back what’s left in the vehicle? Listers, *AfTLD’s Policy and Annual General Meeting Livingstone Zambia July 23 – 27 2012* * * The Africa Top Level Domains Organization (AfTLD), the association of African country code top level domains (ccTLDs) in collaboration with the Zambia Information and Communications Technology Authority (ZICTA), will be hosting its policy and annual General Meeting in Livingstone (Zambia) for Francophone and Anglophone African ccTLDs in July 2012. The Policy meeting which will be hosted by ZICTA, the Zambian regulator, will be held from 23 – 27 July 2012 and will focus on enhancing the visibility of African ccTLDs through branding and marketing, examining the likely impact of new gTLDs on African ccTLDS as well enhancing the robustness and efficiency of African registries by improving the technical infrastructure. The Policy meeting is in line with AfTLD’s key strategic objective of building capacity of African ccTLDs with an aim of improving and enhancing Africa’s internet infrastructure. The Livingstone Policy and annual general meeting is among a series of regular events that AfTLD holds on an annual basis. The event follows a successful workshop for Francophone ccTLDS held in Ouagadougou Burkina Faso from 9 to 13 January 2012. As has been the case with the past events, the Livingstone workshop is supported by AfNIC, ISOC, LexSynergy and Africa in Onespace – AfTLD’s consistent sponsors and partners. Good morning Listers This is to thank all those who attended the very successful Kenya IGF on 6th July. A few of you also followed the process that was webcast. We had stimulating discussions and great presentations. Further, KICTANet handed over the process of convening the Kenya IGF to ISOC.KE. That's what the www.opendataresearch.org research network is planning to explore. The Web Foundation and International Development Research Centre (IDRC) are inviting research proposals that address current gaps in the evidence base underlying the implementation of open data initiatives in the developing world, and to inform policy and practice in a range of different settings. Research partners will be invited to form part of an international research network that will be established over the course of 2013. The project will fund a series of detailed case studies that examine the emerging impacts of specific on-going open data initiatives that address key development themes.
