Dear Colleagues, If you are interested please send an email to info(a)isoc.or.ke, I trust that all are well. ISOC will be supporting a training event organised by the East Africa NOG and TESPOK in December to be held at the AFRAILTI Center on Waiyaki Way from the 16th to the 19th of December. There will be two training tracks being covered: Routing for Beginner-Intermediate Level (focusing on BGP) and Introduction to Unix.This workshop will be taught "AfNOG style" and is good exposure for facilitators as well. We have some slots available for participants so you are free to send 4 participants (2 per track) at no cost. Advanced Routing - BGP This course on Advanced Routing is part of the EANOG Workshop on Network Technology, to be held at AFRALTI in December 2013. Workshop Synopsis: The workshop is a mix of lectures and hands-on training in a well-equipped classroom over a 4-day period to teach skills required for the configuration and operation of large scale Networks that make up the Internet. Who should attend: Technical staff who are now building or operating a wide area service provider network or Internet Exchange point, with international and/or multi provider connectivity. Participants are required to bring laptops. Pre-requisites: Successful completion of a previous AfNOG Scalable Infrastructure Workshop or similar training is required. Alternatively, participants must demonstrate acceptable knowledge of or their experience with a router configuration language. Knowledge of OSPF and ISIS would be an added benefit and not a necessity, and participants must have used BGP. Some user level Unix experience would be advantageous. Amid revelations that Kenya could lose up to US$23 million this year through cybercrime, the Kenyan government has announced its support for the ratification of the African Union (AU) convention on the establishment of a credible legal framework for cybersecurity in Africa. Internet and sharing African wisdom

Friends, How much of our African knowledge is expressed on the Internet? Recently I shared the below with ICANN colleagues:- Agikuyu sayi, “Mundu utari nguku ona imwe ndagiriiruo ni gutuithia ciira wa nguku.” Loosely translated, “A person who does not have even a single hen is not supposed to be elevated to adjudicate over matters poultry/disputes. If more contextually put, a parent is wiser if entrusts their child to the care of another parent than to an individual who does not have a child -- thus lack the full experience of having and raising a child. Is is not common knowledge that kids are such bundles of joy? ;-) Should the child under their watch falter or err, such an individual is likely to impulsively meter out terribly harsh punishments – unlike a fellow parent whom would otherwise hesitate before taking such drastic punitive actions. And today, "Kamuingi koyaga ndiri." - which reminds us of the possitive collective contribution to achieve success, as opposed to individualistic extemism.. Share your cultural knowledge online. Internet Freedom For All Internet freedom is a foreign policy priority for the United States, and has been for many years. Our goal is to ensure that any child, born anywhere in the world, has access to the global Internet as an open platform on which to innovate, learn, organize, and express herself free from undue interference or censorship. Indeed, during his time in Congress, Secretary Kerry worked closely with then-Secretary Clinton to make certain that we could effectively promote long-standing values of openness and human rights in a networked world. To do so, we are supporting the efforts of Americans and committed partners worldwide to bring down the walls that are denying the people of the world connection and access to each other's ideas and services on the Internet. We do this in part because the Internet helps fuel the global economy, increases productivity, and creates jobs built on the unprecedented global reach that the platform provides for our businesses and innovators. Just as importantly, we are champions of Internet Freedom because the Internet serves as a powerful platform to bring information and resources to people who historically have been isolated, or their human rights repressed, so they, too, have the chance to become active, prosperous, and engaged participants in the world community. This year, alone, we have moved closer in many ways to reaching our goal. In May, at the World Telecommunication Policy Forum, we advanced U.S. initiatives to preserve the open Internet and promote the worldwide deployment of broadband communications. In June, we came together in Tunisia with other member states of the Freedom Online Coalition, a forum for like-minded governments -- 21 and growing -- committed to collaborating to advance Internet freedom. As part of our efforts to promote Internet freedom in Iran, in May the Administration authorized the sale of U.S. personal communication technologies to the Iranian public. Three months ago the State Department and USAID awarded $25 million to groups working to advance Internet freedom -- supporting counter-censorship and secure communications technology, digital safety training, and policy and research programs for people facing Internet repression. This funding is the most recent addition to our investment of over $100 million in innovative Internet freedom programs globally. Finally, the State Department joined with other Freedom Online Coalition members to launch the Digital Defenders Partnership, an unprecedented collaboration among government donors to provide emergency support for Internet users under threat in repressive environments. We do this work every day and it is a top priority. The Internet is an endless resource of information. Respect for the freedoms of expression, peaceful assembly, and association has the ability to enhance lives in ways we can’t even imagine, as long as we extend the same respect for these fundamental freedoms to the online world.
